Holman, Joshua Sawyer

Biography

12 Apr. 1794–1 Nov. 1846. Mechanic. Born in Templeton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Son of Jonathan Holman and Zilpha Sawyer. Moved to Genesee Co., New York, by 1829; to Byron, Genesee Co., by June 1830; and to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1836. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by 1836. Received elder’s license, 28 Mar. 1836, in Kirtland. Ordained a seventy, 13–14 May 1837, in Kirtland. Moved to Missouri, 1838; to Adams Co., Illinois, by May 1839; and to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1842. Served as second lieutenant in Nauvoo Legion, 17 Sept. 1842. Appointed to serve mission to Indiana, 10 Apr. 1843. Presided over church conference in Gerry, Chautauqua Co., New York, 28 July 1844. Ordained a high priest, by Oct. 1844. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), 1846, where he died.
